426 business (a record sample) completed the July survey to provide a robust view of business levels in the region. Overall, visitor volume and business turnover decreased by approximately 3%, (compared to July 2010).
55% of businesses reported levels of profitability to be better than or similar to July 2010 (22% better / 33% similar). Changes in visitor volumes were the most likely reason for increased/decreased profitability.
Those with increased profitability again cited increased prices, improved operating procedures and increased marketing as reasons for increases in profitability. Increased overheads, fuel costs, reduced prices and a reduced spend per visitor were also cited amongst other reasons for decreased profitability.
42% of businesses reported booking levels for August as not as good as last year.
The How's Business survey for August is now online and participants completing this survey will be re-directed to the full July report on completion. This is the only way to access the How's Business report.
