Aspiring Managers Shape the Future of Tourism

Sixteen tourism managers have successfully completed a management training programme lead by South West Tourism and are their new skills will be vital in ensuring the future success of their businesses.

Skillful management is often seen as the route to success and, since its launch, 83 tourism staff in the South have now completed an Institute of Hospitality endorsed programme for tourism, called the Aspiring Managers programme. Developed by the Tourism Skills Network and delivered by industry professionals, the Aspiring Managers programme, began in April 2007. This year's  programme included a number of specialist workshops offering a unique opportunity for first line managers in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Aspiring Managers is a dynamic, industry-focused, management development programme designed to produce leaders of the future. Through a seven-month development journey, aspiring managers in the region have developed their own leadership abilities through peer collaboration, briefings from industry experts and workshops in issues such as managing quality, problem solving and managing teams.

This year's programme concludes with a graduation ceremony at Dillington House in Somerset. Programme manager, Miranda Jenkins says "We are in difficult economic times at the moment, and those tourism and hospitality businesses that are still investing in the skills of their managers and staff are best placed to survive the current storm.  I have been hugely impressed with the talent and commitment of those managers participating in this year's programme and feel privileged to have been part of their development as they progress their careers."

All of the course delegates have also passed the accompanying Institute of Leadership and Management Award in First Line Management and are now well placed to implement these new skills into their management roles.
