In my previous update in September I had the tough task of reminding you that, in April 2011, South West Tourism will cease to exist. I also described the critical regional functions, currently fulfilled by South West Tourism, that will help the industry to thrive in the future. We have continued to hear broad support from the region's industry groups for the principle of a partnership that may pick up some of these functions in the future. These discussions resulted in an initial transition stakeholder meeting, which was held on Wednesday 10th November in Exeter.
This was the most influential gathering of the visitor economy in the South West that I remember. They came together and debated if there was any need or desire to work together going forward to make sure that this region maintains its profile. A team of those industry leaders will be working together over the winter months to determine the best way that the visitor economy can continue to work together to make sure that the South West maintains its pre-eminent position in the UK.
We will endeavour to keep you informed as their work progresses and future proposals emerge. Please click here for the notes from the initial meeting.
