Highways Agency Summer Getaway Campaign

The Highways Agency, in conjunction with South West Tourism, has launched a Summer Getaway Map which aims to encourage visitors to plan their journey to the region in advance to avoid peak traffic times this summer.

The map is hosted online so that you can add the link to your website and forward it to your guests before they travel, so that they can enjoy a stress free journey to the South West.

Produced as part of the Highways Agency's Summer Getaway Campaign, the map, now in its fourth year, highlights the best times to travel along with 36 family attractions to visit to break up the journey including gardens, farmyard attractions, museums, safari parks and much more.

Close to eight million visitors are attracted to the South West from all over the country during the summer months, seeking beautiful beaches, rugged coastlines, quaint villages, stately homes, ancient monuments, wild moors and tourist attractions dotting the region. However this creates plenty of traffic on the main roads. At peak times each weekend traffic hot spots delay visitors driving to their holiday destination and affect other traffic in and around the region.  The Highways Agency takes steps to help road users by limiting road works in the region during the summer to essential work only and by providing information to help road users plan their journeys.

Maureen McAlister, Director of South West Tourism, said:
"Driving to a holiday destination is the first part of the holiday experience and rather than visitors being caught up in peak traffic times, this useful map is a one stop shop for visitors coming down to the South West on holiday this year. It details the busy congestion points and offers advice about where to go and what to see en route, breaking up the journey and starting the holiday even sooner."

Malcolm Roberts, Highways Agency Area Performance Manager, said:
"We are delighted that the leaflet has proved so popular and hope that visitors will continue to find it useful in planning their route and stopping points before they travel. Our advice is to avoid the busiest travel periods if you can and these periods are outlined in the leaflet."

Please add the link to the Summer Getaway Map (below) to your websites and also highlight it to your visitors so they can download it prior to their journey.

The getaway map also forms part of the national summer driving campaign which you might also like to add to your website as it offers lots of tips for visitors.
