Is your business prepared for flooding?

The floods that hit Cumbria in November were a stark reminder of the devastation extreme floods can bring to tourism businesses. Whilst we can never prevent floods, there are steps you can take to reduce the damage flooding can cause.

The Environment Agency has launched a new leaflet to highlight the practical steps you can take to protect your business.

The first step you need to take is to understand the risk.  Even if your business is not directly at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea, you could still be affected by surface or groundwater flooding.

Visit the Environment Agency's website or call Floodline on 0845 988 1188 to find out if your business is at risk.

The next things to consider are what steps you can take to keep floodwater out and in the case of bigger floods, what you can do to reduce the damage floodwater might cause if you can't keep it out.

Your should:

  • fit flood boards to doors
  • have air bricks covers ready when flooding is imminent
  • raise electrical sockets to 1.5 metres above floor level
  • replace carpets with tiles and rugs when re-decorating

The Environment Agency - in partnership with South West Tourism - has also produced a flood preparation guide, specifically for caravan and campsites owners.
