The best of the South West were celebrating on the 23rd November 2009 at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2009-2010, in association with Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, South West Water and E-Strategy.
Guest speaker and presenter at this year's event was Gill Williams, Travel Editor of the Sunday Mirror, who added her own anecdotes and comments on the region's winners.
The awards night is the highlight of the tourism calendar; however winners had to wait until the actual awards event at Saunton Sands Hotel, Devon to find out whether they had won a prestigious Gold or Silver tourism award.
The 15 Gold Award winners at this years awards will all now go on to represent the region at the National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence in 2010.
This year we also celebrate the ‘Winner of Winners' Award which goes to Eden Project, Cornwall, for its inspirational role as well as superlative visitor experience
These awards have proven their worth in presenting an opportunity to businesses to showcase their quality not just to the media and customers, but to build morale amongst staff and gain recognition throughout the community. Entrants also valued the feedback from judges and mystery shoppers, all designed to help them further enhance their visitor offering. To win, entrants needed to demonstrate outstanding levels of customer service, plus exemplary facilities, informative and inspirational websites, along with a commitment to sustainability and being accessible to all.
Alistair Handyside, Chairman of South West Tourism, said:
"Many congratulations to all of this year's winners who have exceeded our expectations once again. These businesses continually strive for excellence and I look forward to seeing them on the national stage next year as they proudly support our region."
Eddie Bent, Managing Director of E-Strategy said:
"Congratulations to all of this year's winners. The variety and high standard of the winners was exemplary; with effective use of the Internet demonstrating that the South West has embraced web technology to maximise business performance."
Chris Loughlin, Chief Executive of South West Water, said:
"Our congratulations to all this year's winners proving yet again why the South West is Britain's favourite holiday region. We were most impressed to see the high standard of entries for the eco-tourism award in particular with businesses of all sizes showing that tourism can be green, sustainable and profitable."
