The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced South West Tourism to be one of the finalists for the international 2009 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, which recognise best practices in sustainable tourism in four different categories - Destination Stewardship, Conservation, Community Benefit and Global Tourism Business.
A record number of entries were received from over 40 countries and six continents, narrowing down to just 12 finalists in total with South West Tourism being one of the three finalists in the Destination Stewardship category.
South West Tourism's application focussed particularly on its various partnership work, since 2005. In addition, building on sustainability being a priority of the regional tourism strategy, South West Tourism were the first UK destination body to employ a team of sustainability specialists, and the first regional tourist board to achieve ‘Gold' certification for greening its own operations.
The application also focussed on a range of successful initiatives with the tourism trade (for example, the South West now has more green certified tourism businesses than any other UK region) and its support to help partners within the region, UK, and internationally to adopt a sustainable approach.
South West Tourism is up against the following contenders in the Destination Stewardship Award:
Grupo Puntacana, Dominica Republic - www.puntacana.com
Heritage Watch, Cambodia - www.heritagewatch.org
The next stage of the awards process is for South West Tourism to receive an onsite visit and then the award winner for each category will be announced on the 15th May 2009.
