This research, commissioned by South West Tourism, was undertaken in July 2010 and shows how South West tourism business were doing in June 2010.

473 businesses responded to this survey.

Note: The fact that the school half term was in early June should be taken into account when comparing results with 2009 (when half-term was in May).

Additionally, the World Cup may have had an impact on businesses during the month of June, especially whilst England were playing.

Key points:

  • The number of respondents estimating a decrease in visitor numbers (compared to the same month last year) fell by 14% in June, while those reporting an increase in visitor numbers (38% of businesses) rose in June, but to a lesser extent.
  • This month, for the first time in 7 months, there has been a reported increase in the average overall changes to the number of visitors and turnover, compared to June 09.
  • Over half of the respondents reported that spend per person in June 2010 was lower than in June 2009.
  • 44% of respondents reported bookings for the main summer holiday period as lower than expected.
  • Optimism ratings about prospects for the tourism industry within the South West fell. On a 10 point scale, with 10 as very optimistic and 1 as very pessimistic, the average rating was 5.85 compared to 6.01 in May.
